Vogue's Richard
Alleman discovers ten
great reasons to head to Miami now.
1. The New World Symphony
The last week of January, Miami celebrates the grand opening of its
futuristic,Frank
Gehry–designed New World Symphony campus and 756-seat concert
hall with a round of special performances, plus a gala evening on
January 29. On that night, a world premiere of specially
commissioned video art accompanies Mussorgsky’s Pictures
at an Exhibition, conducted
by New World Symphony founder and artistic director Michael
Tilson Thomas. One of
the most exciting features of the new building is the
7,000-square-foot exterior wall that doubles as a mega-screen on
which concerts will be simulcast free to the public. Watch and
listen—thanks to a high-tech sound system—in the sleek, West
8–designed park that fronts the property.

2. Miami Beach Cinematheque
From its tiny former home in a storefront on Espaņola Way, this
dynamic little institution has made a name for itself by bringing
avant-garde, offbeat, and art-house-style films to South Beach. This
month, the Cinematheque moves into spanking new headquarters in the
recently restored historic Miami Beach City Hall building at 1130
Washington Avenue. Besides its spiffy 75-seat screening room,
designed by architect Scott
Weinkle and interior
designer Jeffrey
Barone of Bonafida
Design, the MBC, founded and headed by movie loverDana
Keith, will also have
a bookshop, library, and exhibition space (opening with an exhibit
of rare photos, in collaboration with Rudolf Budja Gallery, by
Hollywood photographer Frank
Worth), and will host a first-ever “Made-In-Miami-Movie Tour”
focusing on the city’s film history.
